How we helped others go green in 2011

2011 was another exciting year for Postwink as we continued our quest to promote a culture of recycling through the distribution of our quality, easy-to-use products.

As the year drew to a close, we were involved in a number of exciting initiatives throughout the country – a sign that South Africans are getting behind the green movement and impacting their environment positively!

Engen and Woolworths, in association with Nampak recycling, launched a recycling initiative at Engen forecourts in Cape Town and Pretoria, which they will soon be extending to Durban. Don’t forget to look out for our recycling igloos next time you fill up!

Another exciting launch, “Keen2BGreen with Getaway”, saw the well-known travel magazine dropping off Postwink leather-touch recycling bins and recycling boxes at 11 media agencies in Cape Town, JHB and Durban.

There’s also a wonderful new addition to UNISA’s Pretoria and Florida Estate campuses: Postwink igloos and black leather-touch and stainless steel recycling bins. The university will be launching its Recycling Day on 24 January in Pretoria.

Two top Cape Town tourist destinations are also firmly behind the drive to recycle. In December, we delivered three stainless steel bins to Table Mountain, where they are being used to collect glass, paper, plastic and compostable cutlery, while in the Cape Winelands, Spier wine estate has increased its number of recycling bins and is currently running a recycling pilot in its kitchens, using Postwink EcoCylinders.

We’re also exceptionally excited about these clients who we partnered with in 2011: Total (our recycling igloos can be seen on several of their Johannesburg forecourts), Anglo-American and Anglo-Platinum (our leather-touch recycling bins have been installed at their head offices in Johannesburg), the Cape Town Convention Centre (where our stainless steel units can be seen in the foyers) and the Witzenberg Municipality (it recently purchased six Postwink recycling igloos for public use in Ceres.)

With so many of our bins out there, it’s vital that South Africans know where to find them, so we’ve recently been hard at work adding details of new drop-off recycling sites to (http://www.mywaste.co.za/).

And finally, in the spirit of giving – and giving back in particular – Postwink donated 39 bamboo plants to the Blue Disa Community in Gauteng through Food & Trees For Africa’s Bamboo for Africa programme. This brings our total tree donations since 2008 to 128.

No matter how big or small your recycling initiative, Postwink can help you! For more information, please contact us at info@postwink.co.za

Postwink at St Stithians Spring Festival

St Stithians College hosted their annual Spring Festival, which has evolved from a pure “fun” day event to a “fun, educational, environmental awareness” evening event.

This year the Festival was held on Friday, 16 September 2011 and consisted of fun activities for the children, a Crafters Market, live entertainment, an adventure race, raffle, food market (all done by the Grade 8 girls as part of their curriculum) and an Environmental Fair.

Because the College takes their environmental responsibilities very seriously and recycle (using Postwink products as well), we were delighlited to support such a worthy event.

Thank you to everyone who visited Lise at our stand; and thanks to Lise for spending her Recycling Day promoting Recycling to all!

Postwink plants 34 trees in Khayelitsha

Since 2009, Postwink Recycling Products has been including a small contribution to Food & Trees for Africa (FTFA) in all our pricing. So whenever Postwink sends you a quotation, you see the number of trees you inherently purchase with each order. Then, every few months, Postwink reconciles these contributions and buys trees from FTFA’s Trees for All programme – and this is how Postwink came to attend the planting of 34 indigenous trees at the Sinako High School in Khayelitsha, on Friday 19th August.

Berenice Westmore of Postwink and Desmond Winkworth of FTFA received a warm welcome from Charles Phiri, the programme director at the school, and from the school’s Environmental Club, which is made up of a large number of Grade 11 learners. After some inspiring speeches on the impact of our lifestyle on climate change and the meaning of the trees to the school and the environment, Mr Winkworth got his hands dirty and demonstrated how the trees must be planted: in a straight line, with a neat hole and not forgetting the tube used for watering! The 3 types of trees planted were wild olive, wild peach and chinese poplar.

Albeit in the rain, the learners watched everything and seemed very excited about their trees and the event in general – and went on to plant two more trees.

Mr Phiri indicated that each learner would plant their own tree (once the weather improved), which is a great way to ensure that all the leaners are involved and feel responsible for the wellbeing of these trees.

We hope that everyone at Sinako High School enjoy the trees, not only for their use in combatting global warming, but also as something that will provide shade and greenery to their school ground.

Postwink wants to thank all their customers who have indirectly contributed to this worthwhile cause and hopes to be planting a lot more trees in the years to come!
